September Greenway Updates From Around Ireland
There was some great news for the Dublin Galway greenway over the summer including funding for the Meath/Kildare sections and extension in Westmeath and Longford. But away from the Dublin Galway Greenway, there have been more developments around the country that we have been keeping an eye on. More updates to follow.
The new harbour has been finished at Royal Canal Park. This was developed by Ballymore as part of the Royal Canal Park housing development. The cycleway along the canal bank has been reopened. As can be seen from the photos - the harbour is excellently built and will make for a very attractive feature on the Dublin Galway Greenway,
The Galway Cycling Campaign has called on the Minister for Transport, Mr. Paschal Donohoe TD, to reject IFA proposals to put a local section of an international greenway beside the old N6. Controversy has erupted about the routing of the Galway section of the Eurovelo 2 cycling route. The route is meant to start in Galway and end in Moscow and much of the mainland sections are already in place. Conflict has arisen between the IFA and the NRA who have proposed to CPO farmers’ land to construct the route. The cyclists say both sides are at fault with the NRA approach viewed as poorly managed and divisive. The county council and NRA seem to have ignored standard methods for providing such routes without splitting farms. The cyclists accept that the appointment of the NRA to lead the project has been highly questionable and that the NRA involvement has not been positive. However, the IFA suggestion of putting a Greenway beside a busy road is equally flawed and would make the count
The Dublin Galway Greenway blog has learned that a decision is imminent on the preferred route from Athlone to Galway. This route section is the final jigsaw piece of the coast to coast greenway which is a strategic priority by the government. Several news outlets are reporting today that a preferred route has been selected. The greenway team are due to meet local councillors tomorrow to explain the decision and a further public consultation will then take place. Galway Bay FM are reporting that Route 5 has been selected. This route would see the route go from Athlone to Shannon bridge , Clonfert, Meelick and Eyrecourt before going on via Portumna, Clarinbridge and Oranmore. Many supporters of the other proposed route will be disappointed if the rumoured route is in fact route 5. Local representative Ciaran Cannon is calling for the government to link up the villages and towns on the other links to the national greenway network.
