Latest Update: Opening of the Dublin Galway Greenway Between Glasnevin and Drumcondra

The Dublin Galway Greenway project has taken a significant step forward with the opening of the Royal Canal Greenway between Glasnevin and Drumcondra. Dublin City Council official announced that the majority of the linear park along the Royal Canal, between Cross Guns Bridge and Binns Bridge, was opened to the public on Friday, July 19, 2024.

Reopening Details

This first phase of the reopening includes:

- The entire northern towpath alongside the railway line.

- The new pedestrian and cycle bridge at Lock 3.

- The southern towpath between Glengarriff Parade and the former Spain’s warehouse (to the rear of Saint Ignatius Road).

The remaining section of the southern towpath, from the former Spain’s warehouse to Binns Bridge, will reopen after the completion of the Dorset Street Lower toucan crossing at Binns Bridge.

Enhancing Urban Connectivity

The newly opened section provides an essential link in Dublin's urban cycling and walking infrastructure. It runs along the Royal Canal, offering a scenic and practical route for both recreational users and daily commuters. The greenway features wide, smooth surfaces suitable for cyclists and pedestrians, ensuring safety and accessibility.

Historical Context and Environmental Impact

The Royal Canal, dating back to the late 18th century, is a historically significant waterway. This greenway section allows users to engage with Dublin's heritage, featuring informational plaques about the canal's history. The project also supports environmental sustainability by promoting non-motorized transport options, helping to reduce urban traffic congestion and carbon emissions.

Community Benefits

The greenway’s reopening is expected to benefit local communities significantly. It provides a safe and pleasant route for outdoor activities, which can improve overall community health and well-being. Additionally, the increase in foot and cycle traffic is likely to support local businesses by attracting more customers to the area.Future Prospects

Future Prospects

This development is part of a broader vision to establish a continuous greenway from Dublin to Galway. When completed, this project will offer an uninterrupted route across Ireland, linking various towns and cities. The opening of the Glasnevin to Drumcondra section is a crucial milestone in realizing this vision, enhancing connectivity and promoting sustainable transport across the region.
